Members night: Staying safe in the digital age, celebrating maritime spirit

On Sep 20, Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS) hosted its Members Night, bringing members together for an evening that blended learning, celebration, and camaraderie.

The event commenced with a session led by Digital Ambassadors from the Infocomm Media Development Authority’s (IMDA) SG Digital Office, titled “Staying Safe & Smart in the Age of Generative AI.” The talk highlighted how artificial intelligence is being harnessed to create convincing yet fabricated content such as deepfakes and voice clones.

Attendees also learnt about recent scams, including a case in Hong Kong where fraudsters used AI to impersonate a company executive during a video call, resulting in significant financial losses. Practical tips were shared to help members identify such threats and stay vigilant when navigating the digital world.

The evening also included a celebration of World Maritime Day, observed on 25 September this year, honouring the essential role of seafarers in connecting global trade and communities.

With a live band, classic hits from artists such as Bob Marley and Bon Jovi infused energy into the room. A major highlight was when SOS Vice President, Raj Moham, took the stage to sing “I’m Sailing” by Rod Stewart, a fitting tribute to the maritime theme that received warm applause from the crowd.

The night concluded with a lucky draw, rounding off the event on a joyful note.

SOS looks forward to welcoming members to the next gathering.
