5% pay rise secured for seafarers under new SMOU/SOS IBF Agreement

A 5% wage increase for seafarers over the 2026-2027 period has been secured following the successful conclusion of the SMOU/SOS International Bargaining Forum (IBF) Agreement negotiations—delivering tangible gains for seafarers amid a challenging economic landscape.

The agreement was reached after constructive talks in Singapore on Oct 13, between the International Maritime Employers’ Council (IMEC), ITF, SMOU and SOS. Representing SOS at the negotiations were General Secretary Daniel Tan and Executive Secretary Chen Chuanyi.

Beyond wages, the agreement strengthens protection for seafarers by providing higher compensation for death and permanent disability to reflect rising medical costs and inflation,
enhancing peace of mind for seafarers and their families.

Alongside the negotiations, SOS also connected with ITF affiliates from Hong Kong, Indonesia and Taiwan, reinforcing regional solidarity and the shared commitment to advancing seafarers’ interest.
