No One Left Adrift: Global Call to Protect Seafarers in Times of Change

The International Conference on Seafarers’ Human Rights, Safety and Well-Being was held in Manila, Philippines, from Sep 1 to 3, under the theme “No One Left Adrift: Seafarers at the Cross Currents of Commerce, Conflict and Change.” The event brought together maritime leaders, unions, and international agencies to discuss ways to improve the protection of seafarers’ welfare and rights.

Discussions examined persistent challenges, including extended contracts, unpaid wages, and limited healthcare, alongside the need for stronger crisis response, gender inclusivity, and a just transition as the industry adapts to climate change and digitalisation.

Representing Singapore were SOS General Secretary Daniel Tan, together with delegates from MPA and SMOU.

The conference concluded with the presentation of the Manila Declaration, urging governments, unions, and industry to strengthen welfare systems and equip seafarers with skills for a changing world.
