On 9 Nov, SOS marked the Festival of Lights with a vibrant Deepavali celebration, bringing together members and their families for an evening of culture, gratitude, and joy.
The festivities kicked off with the rhythmic beats of traditional Indian drums, creating an atmosphere of anticipation and excitement. A ceremonial highlight was the lighting of the *Kuthu Vilaku* (traditional oil lamp) by SOS President Kam Soon Huat, General Secretary Daniel Tan, Vice President Raj Moham, and members. This symbolic act represented the triumph of light over darkness, embodying the spirit of Deepavali.
Vice President Raj Moham gave a heartfelt greeting, reminding everyone that Deepavali is a time to reflect on the blessings of home, family, and community. His message of gratitude resonated deeply with attendees.
The celebration continued with vibrant traditional dances, followed by a special performance by Singapore’s only snake charmer. His act fascinated the audience, blending entertainment with education. Guests even had the chance to pose with his snakes for memorable photos.
Attendees were treated to a sumptuous feast, featuring dishes like Indian rojak, chicken briyani, alongside an array of Indian sweets. Each guest also received a delightful door gift, including a packet of muruku to take home.
Rounding off the evening was a live band that brought the house down with an eclectic mix of Hokkien, Cantonese, Malay, English, and rock classics. The music had many on their feet and singing along.
The celebration was a beautiful reminder of the values that Deepavali represents—gratitude, unity, and the enduring power of light and hope.
